5 fun ways to celebrate your own Birthday

Having celebrated my birthday last week I can tell you that while we spend a lot of effort in making birthdays special for our family we don’t always get a fancy birthday party for ourselves. Let’s face it – most times we have to plan them ourselves and it doesn’t feel right.  However, I’d like to tell you that it IS right. You are the most important person in your life and you deserve to have a day where you are the centre of attention. Here are my five top tips on how to make yours a treat.

Gift yourself ‘me’ time
On your birthday, it’s perfectly understandable to be a little selfish. Go out for a nice cup of coffee with your favourite book or watch a movie that’s playing in the theatres. Head to the spa. You can invite a few friends along, or just take the trip yourself. Make sure to pick a place that you know you’ll enjoy, regardless if you’re going alone or with others–after all, it’s your birthday.

Throw a Party
Birthdays are special. It’s important to spend them with those who will put a smile on your face. Assuming no one has a surprise party planned, invite a few friends over for drinks and dinner. Keep it simple, let each guest bring something to contribute to the meal -in lieu of a present! Plan in advance and ask each guest to get a dish – an appetizer, main course or dessert.  Then spend your special time with the people you treasure most and soak up lots of birthday love! If you aren’t in the mood to cook for a big bash or clean up after the party, go ahead and make reservations at your favourite restaurant.

Go shopping for your Birthday Gift
Treat yourself to something you’ve always wanted because today is your day! If you’ve been waiting for an occasion to purchase something then this is it. Whether it’s the pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing at the Mall or a mobile phone that’s caught your fancy, go ahead and don’t hesitate on splurging for yourself. Anything brought on your birthday becomes special by default and will always be treasured for a long period of time. If you have anything in mind, start saving for it in advance so that it doesn’t mess with the important stuff.

Make someone else’s day amazing
Instead of splurging on yourself you could also choose to be selfless and focus on the less privileged. Celebrate your birthday with them either by spending time helping them with doing things or making a donation. The satisfaction you get by doing this is unmatchable and valuable. This could even take the form of a visit to a religious place, orphanage or old folk’s home. You can also visit schools and hospitals to lend a helping hand.
Celebrate my style
For days before my birthday I had people asking me what kind of cake I would be making for myself! And if you know me you can be assured that I had one planned for sure. This year it was a decadent Peach & Pineapple Upside down. It’s not glam, or decorative and a lot of folks don’t get it. But to me, every bite is pure heaven.

How are you celebrating your birthday this year? I bet you have some really amazing ways to celebrate your birthday, so be sure to share with me so I can plan that idea for my birthday next year!
